Swing Dance and Lindy Hop Classes & Workshops

Professional Instruction:
Classes are taught by Jeffrey and Andrea Smith, professional swing dance instructors and founding directors of Swingphoria Dance Troupe. Students describe the class as “Incredibly Fun!” “the best mix of simply breaking dance down for beginners and the skills to help more advanced dancers improve their technique,” and “the best in town--you'll learn the most and you'll have the most fun.” To reach the instructors, call toll free: 888-797-7000 or e-mail jeffrey@swingsmith.com. Register at the door.

Sunday Night Classes are held at the Robert A. Lee facility on Gilbert Street in Iowa City.

Sunday Night Classes, 8 weeks.
8 weeks. September 7 - October 26

6:45-7:30 Intro to Swing Dance
7:30-8:15 Intermediate Swing Dance
8:15-9:00 Intermediate Lindy Hop

The Dance Passport:
Most students take the Dance Passport, which gives you access to up to all four classes every Sunday. Beginner dancers enjoy learning more advanced moves in the intermediate classes, particularly after a couple of weeks of instruction. (Since all moves are broken down into simple components, beginners find most intermediate moves easy to pick up.) Intermediate dancers enjoy reviewing Intro classes to remember moves and brush up on styling. And Intermediate women dancers often re-take the intro classes to learn to lead.

Class Descriptions:

Introduction to Swing Dance
Learn the swing dance moves and styling to confidently join in the nationwide swing dance craze. (Since swing moves can be danced to many forms of music, you’ll also improve your whole dance repertoire.) You will learn the basic 6 count, with varieties for fast and slow tempos, along with plenty of fun steps. No partner necessary.

Schedule and fees—see above

Introduction to Lindy Hop
Lindy Hop is the flashy original swing dance that Smithsonian magazine described as the fluid and acrobatic style that the best swing dancers in the country are doing. Although its 8 count basic is more challenging than the 6 count swing basic, beginners appreciate the manner in which steps are broken down into simple, easy-to-learn components. And experienced swing dancers add a whole new set of terrific moves to their repertoire, all of which allow for individual expression and improvisation. No partner necessary.

Schedule and fees—see above

Intermediate Swing
(New Moves and Combinations)
Add new swing moves and ignite your style. Although many intermediate swing moves are flashy and look complicated, when taught step-by-step, they’re actually easy and lot’s of fun. One students describes the class as, “Two thumbs up, a must dance experience.” No partner necessary.

Schedule and fees—see above

Intermediate Lindy Hop
(New Moves and Combinations)

If you’re a Lindy Hopper, you’ll want to take this class. In addition to learning new outstanding steps and routines, there will be a lot of attention on individual style. No partner necessary.

Schedule and fees—see above
